Biopersistence of respirable synthetic fibers and minerals: point of view of the chest physician.

چکیده
Problems of diagnosis related to the presence or absence of particles in lung and pleural tissues are discussed from the clinician's viewpoint. The advantage of applying mineralogical analytical techniques is considered.

An experimental approach to the evaluation of the biopersistence of respirable synthetic fibers and minerals.
The biopersistence of fibers and minerals in the respiratory tract is an important parameter in the toxicity of those materials. The biopersistence of respirable synthetic fibers and minerals in man can be most closely evaluated in an animal model. While acellular and in vitro systems are important for initial evaluation of solubility and durability, they cannot simulate the dynamics of inhalat...
متن کاملBiopersistence of respirable synthetic fibers and minerals: the point of view of the epidemiologist.
Biopersistence of fibers and minerals in human respiratory tissues is an important aspect of the toxicity of these agents. However, few data are available from human studies. Although a number of studies have measured the lung burden of asbestos and other minerals in exposed humans, few presented information relevant to biopersistence of these agents. The studies analyzing asbestos lung burden ...
متن کاملRole of Biopersistence in the Pathogenicity of Man-made Fibers and Methods for Evaluating Biopersistence: A Summary of Two Round-table Discussions
This paper summarizes two roundtable discussions held at the conclusion of the International Conference on Biopersistence of Respirable Synthetic Fibres and Minerals. The first round table addressed the role of biopersistence in the pathogenicity of fiber-induced disease. The panel included T. W. Hesterberg (Chairman), J.M.G. Davis, K. Donaldson, B. Fubini, N.F. Johnson, G. Oberdoerster, P. Séb...
متن کاملIntroduction: INSERM-IARC-CNRS workshop on biopersistence of respirable synthetic fibers and minerals.
Parameters of respirable mineral dust responsible for respiratory toxicity in humans have been investigated extensively. When the coal industry was flourishing, the major concern was with silicosis resulting from exposure to silica and silicate dusts. Epidemiological studies on asbestos workers in the 1960s brought to light the fibrogenic and carcinogenic properties of fibrous particles. Then i...
متن کاملSignificance of the biodurability of man-made vitreous fibers to risk assessment.
It is generally agreed that the biodurability of man-made vitreous fibers is a major factor for the characterization of potential health effects. As there is currently no standardization of experimental protocols to determine biodurabilty, the results of the clearance assays have not been used up to now for regulatory purposes. Methods used to analyze biodurability in animal models are short-te...
